St. Henry Morse Church, built on new grounds acquired by the Diocese in 2012, stands as a testament to innovative architectural design and forward-thinking heating solutions. Innovative Heating Design

From the outset, the church’s architects were keen to incorporate cutting-edge technology in the building’s heating system. During the design phase, they recommended the installation of heat pumps – a rare and progressive choice for church heating at the time. The church was also outfitted with underfloor heating throughout, perfectly complementing the heat pumps and improving the efficiency of heating. By eliminating the need for radiators, the church ensured a safer and more visually pleasing environment for children and parishioners alike.

The underfloor heating was strategic, as it distributes warmth much more evenly throughout the space compared to traditional radiators. This approach ensured that the entire congregation could enjoy a comfortable environment, rather than just those seated near the heat sources.

Heat Pump Performance and Challenges 

The architects’ decision to utilise heat pumps over a traditional fossil fuel boiler and time clock system has proven to be a wise one. These pumps maintain a constant ambient temperature, which is more cost-effective in the long run. Despite the innovative choice, the system faced challenges over time, particularly as knowledge of such systems was limited fourteen years ago when the church was built.

We relied on the guidance of our building contractors and architects regarding the make and size of the ASHPs. Fourteen years ago, knowledge of such systems was limited, and there weren’t many manufacturers available

Initially, the heat pumps performed well, but eventually the church encountered issues. The original installation company, based in Devon, provided little assistance, leaving the church in a difficult position. After an exhaustive search, those at the church were grateful to discover Energie Solutions.

Energie Solutions promptly serviced the church’s two heat pumps, identifying minor issues and uncovering a catastrophic breakdown in one of the units. This breakdown was likely due to a lack of servicing over the first ten years.

After the first unit failed, we feared for the second, and sure enough, it also failed the following spring.

Energie Solutions replaced the first failed heat pump with a 14KW Mitsubishi Zubadan unit. The church then signed up for a service plan, solidifying their commitment to regular maintenance. The second failed unit is currently being replaced with another 14KW Zubadan unit.
