Pressure Relief Valves (PRV) and Why Your Home Heating System Depends on it

When it comes to keeping your home warm and comfortable, the last thing most people think about is the safety systems hidden within their heatpump, or traditional fossil fuelled boiler. But among these unsung heroes is one tiny component that quietly protects your home from possible disaster: the pressure relief valve (PRV).

This small valve has a big job and if it fails, the consequences can be serious.

What is a Pressure Relief Valve?

A pressure relief valve on a domestic heating system (like a heatpump, combi boiler, or a hot water cylinder) is designed to automatically release pressure if it builds up beyond a safe level. This can happen if water overheats, if there’s a system blockage, or if a fault occurs in the thermostat or controls.

When working correctly, the PRV opens just enough to release the excess pressure and closes again once normal conditions are restored. It’s a simple mechanical device – but one that’s absolutely vital to your safety.

Why is it so Important?

  1. Prevents Overpressure Explosions – Water expands when heated. If pressure isn’t released, the system could rupture or, in rare cases, explode. A failed PRV can turn your heat pump or hot water tank into a dangerous pressure vessel.
  2. Protects System Components – High pressure can damage pipes, joints, heat exchangers, and seals, leading to leaks or system failure.
  3. Prevents Costly Repairs – A damaged heat pump or burst hot water cylinder can cause extensive damage to flooring, walls, and property. The PRV prevents such outcomes.
  4. Ensures Safe Operation – Your heating system is designed to operate within a specific pressure range. The PRV ensures it stays within that range.

What Happens When a PRV Fails?

PRVs can fail in two key ways, each with its own set of risks:

  1. Stuck Closed (Fails to Open)
    • What It Means: Pressure can’t escape the system
    • Result: The heatpump or cylinder could build up dangerous pressure levels, risking a violent release, component failure, or explosion. Whilst most modern systems have multiple safety cutouts, relying on backups alone is risky
  2. Stuck Open (Leaking Valve)
    • Visible leaking or dripping near the valve or from the discharge pipe
    • Frequent drops in system pressure, requiring manual top-ups
    • Unusual noises like banging or hissing from the boiler
    • Signs of corrosion around the valve or discharge pipe

If you notice any of these, don’t ignore them.

The pressure relief valve may be one of the smallest components in your home heating system, but it plays one of the biggest roles in keeping your home safe. Regular maintenance, a watchful eye, and timely intervention can help avoid dangerous and costly outcomes.

When it comes to your heating system, safety isn’t optional – it’s engineered in. Make sure your pressure relief valve stays ready to do its job, so your home can stay warm, safe, and sound.
